For every hundred resumes an employer receives, only a few resumes stand out from the crowd. Want your resume to shine in the eyes of the employer you want to attract? Start by including a well-written resume cover letter with the resume. Then, follow these resume guidelines to create an interview winning resume that is head and shoulders above the crowd. 1- Formatting and feel, on a mailed-in resume, matter. Your resume, at first glance, can impress or depress the employer. Lots of open space, a clear, easy-to-read font such as 12 point Arial, and easy-to- find and skim information, entice the employer to read on. With electronic publishing, every mailed resume should be freshly printed on high quality paper. And don’t even think of sending your application to my company in your current employer’s envelope, or with metered postage. Think about what this says about the integrity of the candidate. I receive, at least, one of these a week. Envelopes do matter. 2- You will likely grow tired of hearing this but: correct spelling, appropriate grammar, no missing words, and no typing mistakes make your resume an employer-pleaser right out of the starting gate. An error-free resume is rare. Indeed, some hiring managers will not further consider your candidacy if they find even one mistake. Every mistake makes me pause and think. Every mistake makes me question your carefulness, care, and attention to detail. Don’t make me pause; don’t make me think. 3- Contact Information: In this era of instant messaging, email, and cell phones, there is absolutely no reason to make contacting you difficult for the potential employer. Yet, over half the resumes I receive have no contact information except a home phone number. And guess what? You’re never home. Give the potential employer your cell phone number, even if you have to buy a mobile for your job search. Avoid the dreaded phone tag that may make you miss out on an interview altogether. 4- Write and customize an “objective” for each job and employer. The objective is your opportunity to connect your skills, experience, traits, and job requirements with those the employer is seeking. Read the job posting carefully and you can pick out exactly what the employer believes he needs. Don’t settle for a lame, “I seek a challenging opportunity to utilize my skills with a progressive employer who will provide opportunities for growth.” In response to an ad for a marketing specialist, I received this customized objective: “I am seeking a position as a marketing specialist in a growing, environmentally conscious company that will utilize my current skills in the development of advertising and other marketing materials and website design and writing. At the same time, I hope to gain experience in market research, Internet competitive analysis, and market segmentation.” Who do you think I called? 5- Include a customized section called “Career Highlights / Qualifications.” This section of the resume is usually a series of bulleted points that emphasize your most important career experience, your skills, your personality traits and characteristics, and some key accomplishments from your work history as they relate to the job for which you are applying. 6- For each former employer, clearly indicate the company name, your position, and the dates of your employment. Provide a brief overview statement that tells me about what the company does, its sales, products, and customers. This helps me assess your experience. Then, tell me exactly what you did for the company in a brief statement. Don’t make me look for information, read between the lines, or try to guess. I won’t and your resume will end up in the dreaded job file for the required year. (You don’t really think anyone takes the time to sort through all those aging resumes, do you?) 7- For each employer, include a list of “key contributions” or “key achievements.” Don’t make the mistake of stating, “I answered a multi-line phone system. I provided customer service.” You want to highlight key measurable achievements and successes such as: “I reduced the time for order fulfillment from 2 days to 12 hours.” “I reduced accounts collectible by 80 percent.” “My marketing campaign for the new product won two industry awards for effectiveness.” 8- Education statements matter. State dates of attendance, majors, minors, and degrees. Don’t make me guess whether you have a degree or just took a few classes. I will figure it out and it ticks me off to have to figure it out. 9- Do include a section that lists awards and other recognition. President of the Junior Class, Secretary of the Synchronized Swim Team, four year merit scholarship winner, or college economics prize winner will catch my eye much faster than a resume without awards and recognition. (Of course, you’d include this section on a resume only if you have an award or recognition to list.) 10- Do include a personal section that highlights accomplishments, and anything else that will raise the value of you, as a potential employee, in the eyes of the employer. In this section, catching my eye recently are: volunteerism; involvement with philanthropic causes; publications; team and individual sports participation; leadership positions in school or community organizations (especially in resumes without an “Awards and Recognition” section) or even, “I self-funded my college education by working part-time during all four years of school.” Well, this is my best advice about what catches my attention – positively – in a resume. I can’t speak for every employer, but know that you can’t go far wrong – and you may go far in the right direction - if you heed these recommendations. When your resume is competing with hundreds of others for attention, you need to do the right things right to be heard above the noise. You can create a winning resume. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< BEST [10] JOBS IN 2010, ACCORDING TO THIS STUDY: What do you think? The sagely advice? Move to Canada. There was a fluttering Maple Leaf on the homepage Friday of the Huffington Post: The accompanying headline read: Need A Job? Try Canada, Where Hiring Is Booming And Home Prices Are Rising. The article was published amid news that Canada's economy added a whopping 93,200 new jobs last month; the U.S., meanwhile, continues to struggle with unemployment woes. The bottom of the HuffPost article carried a poll, asking people whether they would be willing to move to Canada for work. The results of that poll — which is by no means scientific — said 57 per cent would move to Canada if that's where the jobs are, while 16 per cent said they'd stay in the States. The U.S. Department of Labor reports the American unemployment rate at 9.5 per cent, and not really improving, while Canada's was reported Friday at 7.9 per cent and dropping fast. Economists say there are no easy answers as to why Canada is doing better — other than it just has a lot of different factors going for it. "There’s no arguing with this strong report. The jobs picture clearly shows that the Canadian recovery hasn’t stalled yet, despite signs of slowing momentum in the U.S. and other economies," says Benjamin Reitzes of BMO Capital Markets. Reitzes says Canada simply has had more going for it: exposure to commodities; a rebound in demand for Canadian manufactured goods; less indebted households with more money free to spend. The Huffington Post article tells readers: "Stubbornly high unemployment rates got you down? Not sold on the economic recovery? Look no further than America's polite neighbor to the north, where jobs numbers are surging and home prices have been rising steadily for nearly a year. "Last month, Canada, a nation with roughly one tenth of our population, created about 10,000 more new jobs than America. "Most of those Canadian jobs were created in Ontario and Quebec, which accounted for 90,000 hires. The Huffington Post article quickly generated more than 2,800 comments by 5:30 p.m. Friday. That comment stream featured plenty of Canadian self-congratulation and, amusingly, at one point evolved into a conversation about hockey in which people mainly ridiculed the Toronto Maple Leafs. One U.S. commenter said: "Congrats Canada! You didn't bail out your banks, home prices and sales have remained steady if not better, you have universal health-care, gay marriage and your still creating jobs? CANADA IS THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE." A Canadian responded: "Finance does not run business in Canada, and business does not run politics. "But Canadians might not want to get too smug. It's a trend puzzling to employers, said Luft, vice-president of marketing for Manpower Canada. "We would not get a lot of U. S. workers coming to Canada even though the pay was very attractive," he said. "Those workers would stay in their country and that always amazed us because they were so close. . Most of the workers came from abroad — Philipines, India, Eastern Europe and Western Europe. Take comfort, Canadian job-seekers. For the first time since January 2009, the unemployment rate fell below 8%. Statistics Canada reported that unemployment is at 7.9%, thanks to 93,000 new jobs created in June. A Bigger Salary Or Better Benefits?"These gains offset nearly all the employment losses observed during the labour market downturn which began in the fall of 2008," according to the latest from the Labour Force Survey, with 403,000 new jobs since July of last year. So, what sectors are hiring now? 1. Construction Even though the construction business added just 11,000 jobs last month, it's been the fastest growing industry since last July, the labour survey says. Since July 2009, there have been 94,000 more workers in that sector, thanks in part to the federal government's Economic Action Plan. The plan was designed to invest in infrastructure projects to create jobs in the industry. 2. Retail and Wholesale Trade There has been an increase of 69,000 workers in retail and wholesale trade in the last year, with 22,000 more jobs created last month alone. Although many of these jobs are part-time, the Retail Council of Canada states that the retail industry is the second-largest industry in the country. And part-time can often lead to full-time, the council advises, with opportunities in managerial, finance and administrative jobs that come with seniority. 3. Business and Support Services Business, building and other support services welcomed 20,000 new workers in June, and 86,000 since the beginning of the year. The number of employees in the private sector has continued to rise over the last year as companies add managers and administrative staff to their teams. 4. Health Care and Social Assistance The health care and social assistance sector added 20,000 workers in June. As the population ages, so does its dependence on health care. As in the United States, the Canadian Nurses Association warns that there will be a shortage in health care professionals in the future. CNA is working to improve working conditions for RNs to keep them in the industry, as well as attract newcomers to the profession. 5. Automotive Repair and Personal Care Business The automotive repair and personal care service sector also increased, with 17,000 new jobs in that industry added in June. Job openings are primarily due to current workers retiring. The industry is having some trouble attracting young people, though representatives there are working to develop partnerships with high schools in an effort to pique students' interest in the trade, according to the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service association. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< If you want to read all my articles, please go to WordPress.
